The social dilemma

To social media companies your eyes and ears are worth pure gold. Every second you are connected, they sell to advertisers to create rivers of cash. To keep you on, they put you in a bubble tailored just for you. They show you only stuff you like and connect you with people who agree with everything you say.

In response your brain creates the feelgood hormone dopamine. You feel great. But dopamine is like a drug.  You want more, so you stay connected too long. Another problem: People in the same bubble become convinced only their view is correct. They become hardened against other opinions. Compromise becomes impossible. The inability to find common ground between different groups threatens the fabric of society.

If you tear yourself free, you get notifications to let you know, that you are missing out. To suck you back in. To take back control, turn off all notifications. Limit your time on social media and verify your opinions outside of your bubble.
